Singaporeans: 50 is the new 45
A few weeks ago, I attended a very informative talk regarding The Inner Age Index held by leading healthcare company GSK. It is a survey of Singaporeans aged over 50 on their perceptions and attitudes towards ageing. And I'm glad to be here to share with you more about the summary of survey results that has provided me some new positive insight on Singaporean attitudes towards growing older as the nation faces a shrinking and ageing population.
So here we are talking about ageing population - I'm not sure about you but honestly, as I grow older, problems like this do make me feel worried especially when my parents are growing older each day too. However, after attending the talk, I feel so relieved to know that most of the older generation I know are actually taking ageing much more positively than I do. How awesome, isn't it?
During the talk, they also invited:
Ageless Theatre, a non-profit theatre interest group for seniors based at the Marine Parade Community Club, to put up an awesome skit and performance which depicted Singaporean "Aunties" kinda lifestyle for us. The group welcomes seniors who are passionate about acting and theatre works. Through various initiatives, Ageless Theatre greatly advocates active ageing and helps Singaporeans to rediscover their passions in life.
And also, the youthful & vibrant team from the Happy Table Tennis Club to challenge us for some games. Just look at how fast he is, of course we're no match for him....
Okay wait, did someone just said that he's 65 years old already?
Wow. I'm definitely impressed.
While watching these two different groups of senior citizens doing what they're truly passionate about, I can't help but to feel happy for them. I guess it's also because they actually reminded me of the most important lady in my life too and it made feel even... Happier. (:
She's none other than my dearest Mommykins <3
It's not that I wanna praise my very own beautiful Mother but look at her, I can't believe she's above 50 already! Honestly, she still feels like she's in her 40s. I really love her positive never-say-die attitude in life, her great sense of humor (which can be pretty lame sometim
es too that's why my best friends and her can click so well) and how she feels so good about her appearance everyday.
For example, whenever she bought a new dress, she would drag me into the room and show it off to me or whenever she did something new to her hair, she would wink at both my bro and I and ask: "Pretty not?" Hahahaha, does your Mom do that too? If she does, come on, we gotta admit it's honestly quite annoyingly cute right? (If there's ever such a description)
I guess it's her (extremely) active lifestyle that has greatly contributed to her positive attitude. She wakes up at 6 every morning to exercise at the park nearby my house everyday, she's very passionate about singing and dancing so she meet her friends for some K session every week, she goes marketing with my neighbors too... And the list goes on.
"As we age, it is important to indulge in our passions, stay social and continue to lead full, active lives." I'm proud to say that my Mom is definitely a perfect example. (:
Here's more fun facts for you!
Just so you know, people over the age of 50 now make up almost a quarter of the population in Singapore. While there is currently much discussion around the health and societal implications of an ageing population, the study shows that the vast majority of Singaporeans over the age of 50 feel youthful, vibrant and are not defined by age.
The results of the study have also shown that ageing is more about attitude than the physical passing of time. The results reveal that nine in 10 Singaporeans aged over 50 believe that a positive attitude is the key to feeling younger, while laughing is the best anti-ageing medicine.
In conclusion, the reason why GSK has conducted the Inner Age Index is because they believe that the current national conversation about ageing can be really positive as people take the opportunity to pursue long-held passions and lead a fulfilled lifestyle. (Fun fact: Did I mention boyfriend's Mom just completed her degree too? I feel so proud of her.) By encouraging this conversation, GSK hope to encourage Singaporeans over the age of 50 to do more, feel better and live longer.
To end off this post, I shall share my inner age with you:
